More recently, Jumpstart has begun to intensively address the varied needs of young children diagnosed with PDD and autism using targeted ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) methodology. Originally conducted only in the comfort and familiarity of the child’s home environment, Jumpstart EI now offers center-based autism services as well at a beautifully decorated and equipped play group location. Our ABA therapists collaborate with other therapists on the child’s team to help him/her learn skills which are lacking and to teach supportive family members how to carry over as much as they can from the therapy sessions, thus maximizing the child’s time in Early Intervention. In addition to the therapies, an experienced service coordinator assists the family to advocate effectively for its child, navigate the early intervention system, obtain all necessary services and transition to Department of Education services when appropriate as the three year old child ages out of the EI model. Jumpstart has service coordinators who speak a variety of languages including English, Spanish, Yiddish, Hebrew and German.
All services are provided to newborns through three year olds based on their needs as determined through a multidisciplinary evaluation by NYS approved evaluators. Eligible children receive services via an Individualized Family Service Plan developed with input from the parents, NYC EI program staff and other team members. The municipality arranges for providers to deliver authorized services. All EI services are provided at no out of pocket costs to parents although health insurance may be accessed for reimbursement. EI only reimburses for EI services only; it does not pay for day care or other fees charged by child care settings or community locations.
